TITLE:     Home Support Worker I
START DATE:   Immediately
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Casual

JOB PURPOSE:   Reporting to the Home Support Administrator, the Home Support Worker at level I may provide assistance to families or individuals during times of illness, stress or disability.  The position will require tact, tolerance and good judgment in dealing with a wide variety of people and home situations.  
 
 
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  
Provide Supportive Care to Clients
  • Establish an effective working relationship with client/family
  • Demonstrate respect for client’s feelings, need for confidentiality, privacy, routine and lifestyle when providing services
 
Provide household management
  • Routine housekeeping duties (vacuum, dust, wash floors, clean bathrooms, change beds)
  • Heavier housekeeping duties as required  (seasonal cleaning of walls, windows, cupboards; cleaning of fridge, stove; etc.).   Duties will not exceed use of a 6 foot step ladder.
  • Laundry assistance as required (launder, iron)
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary environment
 
Provide meal preparation and shopping
  • Assist with shopping as required  (ie, groceries, prescriptions, etc)
  • Collect mail
  • Assist with simple basic food preparation and planning (eg. Chopping food items)
 
Prevent the spread of communicable disease
  • Follow communicable disease protocol for universal precautions if handling blood and body fluids  (ie soiled clothing or linens)
 
 Organize work according to client’s needs and assigned tasks
  • Plan authorized care with clients
  • Prioritize assigned tasks
  • Complete work assignment in time provided
 
Maintain accountability
  • Adhere to schedule as assigned
  • Observe and report significant changes in client situations to Administrator
  • Report concerns in performance of tasks to Administrator
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Complete and submit timesheets and mileage reports within expected timelines
  • Complete and submit Incident Reports accurately and in a timely manner
 
 QUALIFICATIONS:
  
Education and Experience
  • Previous experience working with the elderly or infirm in a community setting is preferred.
  • Experience in the tasks of light household maintenance, laundry, and meal preparation.
 
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to provide supportive care in a manner that considers each individual’s need for comfort, privacy, and respect.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and coworkers, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks in allotted time
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for work purposes
  • Current certification in basic first aid
  
NOTE:  Home Support Worker I is NOT expected to:
  • Do household repairs
  • Provide child care
  • Provide respite care or palliative care
  • Perform personal care or provide assistance with activities of daily living
  • Provide ongoing meal preparation for client
